PROSECUTOR REQUESTS INVESTIGATION AGAINST GNJILANE GROUP
The Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor has filed a motion with an
investigative judge of the Belgrade District Court’s War
Crimes Chamber, requesting investigation against 17
individuals, on suspicion of involvement in a war crime
committed in the area of Gnjilane (Kosovo) in the period
between the latter part of June and late September 1999.
According to the Prosecutor’s charges, by their
participation in a campaign of terror which resulted in the
deaths of 59 persons, and in the unlawful arrests and
physical torture of 150, the suspects committed a war crime
against civilian population.

Gnjilane Group Arrested
In an action ordered by Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor
Vladimir Vukčević, units of the Serbian Ministry of the
Interior (MUP) arrested a number of individuals – members of
the so-called Gnjilane Group, part of the Kosovo Liberation
Army (KLA). The group is suspected of involvement in the
kidnapping of 159 Serb civilians and killing of at least 51
persons in the period between June and October 1999.

NENAD MALIĆ FACES INVESTIGATION ON CHARGES OF WAR CRIME IN
STARI MAJDAN
The Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor has filed a motion with
the Belgrade District Court’s War Crimes Chamber, requesting
detention for Nenad Malić (47), with residence in Bečej, for
a war crime committed against three Muslim civilians in
Stari Majdan (BH) in 1992.

PROSECUTOR INDITES SIRETA FOR OVČARA WAR CRIME
The Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor has brought an indictment
against Damir Sireta (45) nicknamed “Sićo“, a Vukovar native
with residence in Mysen (Norway), for a crime committed
against war prisoners in November 1991 at the Ovčara farm
outside Vukovar.

Prosecutor Demands Enquiry into Kepiro Case
The Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor has filed a motion with
the investigative authorities, demanding that enquiry be
launched into the case of Šandor Kepiro (94), a Hungarian
citizen suspected of involvement in the genocide that took
place in Novi Sad, in January 1942.

Mr. Vladimir Vukčević, the Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor,
met Dr. Efraim Zuroff, the Director of the Jerusalem Simon
Wiesenthal Center, on Monday, 15 September, in order to
discuss pretrial and trial proceedings in the cases of Peter
Egner, Milivoj Ašner and Šandor Kepiro. Apart from the War
Crimes Prosecutor’s team, the meeting, which took place in
the War Crimes Prosecutor’s Office, was attended by Ms.
Snežana Malović, the Serbian Minister of Justice, and Ms.
Ana Frenkel, the President of the Jewish Community in
Vojvodina.

Prosecutor seeks investigation into the Egner case
Further to the request submitted by the Serbian War Crimes
Prosecutor, investigation has been launched into the
allegations against Peter Egner (86), a former member of the
Gestapo Department IV and SS deputy commander suspected of
involvement in the genocide against Jews, which was
conducted in Serbia.

against Branko Grujić and Branko Popović, for their alleged

Stojan Župljanin arrested
In a joint operation launched on the outskirts of Belgrade
today at around 12:30, Stojan Župljanin (57), one of the
four Hague fugitives, was arrested and brought before the
investigative judge of the Belgrade District Court's War
Crimes Chamber.

Good regional cooperation key to successful war crimes
investigations and prosecutions

Participants of this year’s Regional State Prosecutors’
Conference entitled Cooperation of State Prosecutor’s
Offices in War Crimes Prosecutions, which was organised by
the Croatian State Prosecutor’s Office on Brioni islands
during 15 and 16 May, discussed the essential role of good
communication among prosecutors in the region. The meeting
focused on further enhancement of cooperation in the
prosecution of war criminals, which is particularly
important in the light of the completion strategy of the
International Criminal Tribunal for the Former

Government on Friday, 11 April, Damir Sireta (43), accused
of participation in the war crime committed at the Ovčara
farm outside Vukovar, will be extradited to the Serbian
judicial authorities within a month’s time.
