Good regional cooperation key to successful war crimes investigations and prosecutions

Participants of this year’s Regional State Prosecutors’ Conference entitled Cooperation of State Prosecutor’s Offices in War Crimes Prosecutions, which was organised by the Croatian State Prosecutor’s Office on Brioni islands during 15 and 16 May, discussed the essential role of good communication among prosecutors in the region. The Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor has addressed the investigative authority of the Belgrade District Court's War Crimes Chamber, requesting investigation against Željko Đukić, Dragan Medić, Dragan Borojević and Miodrag Šolaja, on suspicion of engagement in a war crime committed in Podujevo on 28 March 1999. On that occasion, according to the prosecution charges, these individuals killed 14 and seriously wounded 5 ethnic Albanian civilians, most of whom were women and children. >>>

The Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor filed an appeal with the Serbian Supreme Court today, relating to the first-instance verdicts in the Scorpions case, rendered by the War Crimes Chamber of the Belgrade District Court.
The Prosecutor's appeal refers to the Chamber's decision regarding Pero Petrašević and Aleksandar Medić, who were respectively sentenced to 13 and 5 years of prison. Additionally, the appeal challenges the Chamber's decision to release Aleksandar Vukov, and argues that the acquittal was based on faulty factual determination. >>>

On the premises of the War Crimes Prosecutor's Office, Norwegian and Swedish investigative authorities have interviewed nine new witnesses this week, related to the Dretelj case. The case addresses a war crime against civilian population committed at the Dretelj camp, which was controlled by the Croatian defence force in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Throughout the period May - August 1992, Dretelj was a detention centre for at least 211 ethnic Serbs captured by the Croatian and Muslim authorities. >>>
